Habitat for Humanity Newark (HFHN)
is dedicated to building simple, decent homes in Essex County, New Jersey. In
our first twenty years, we concentrated our efforts on one of Newark's most
economically distressed neighborhoods: the Central Ward. As we move into our
third decade of Building Homes and Building Hope, our construction projects will
stretch into other sections of Newark and other cities in the county.
We're proud that since our founding in 1986, over 63 families (and
counting!) have achieved the dream of homeownership through Habitat
Newark.

Lowe's and Habitat invite all women
to help build futures, overcome poverty housing during National
Women Build Week, May 4 - 10.
Newark, NJ - It won't be men laying bricks, pounding nails, and
raising walls at the construction site for a local family's new
Habitat for Humanity house. On Saturday, May 10 women volunteers
will be manning tools and building materials, working on a family's
new home in Newark in recognition of National Women Build Week, May
4 – 10, sponsored by Lowe’s.
Developed through the partnership between Lowe's and Habitat for
Humanity, National Women Build Week celebrates the compassion,
dedication, talents and abilities of women from all walks of life.
The goal is to both showcase the accomplishments of Habitat's women
volunteers and invite new women volunteers to join the effort to
provide decent, safe, affordable housing.
The week leading up to Mother's Day was selected for its
significance to many volunteers, as families with children make up a
staggering number of those in need of adequate housing: more than 12
million children - one in six – live in poverty housing in the
United States alone.
Lowe's underwrites the Habitat for Humanity Women Build program,
bringing women from all walks of life together to learn construction
skills and then use those skills to be part of the solution to
poverty housing.
Habitat for Humanity Newark’s Women Build team has already funded
and built two homes in Newark’s Central Ward for families that had
previously lived in substandard conditions. The group is currently
raising funds to construct a third home in the area for a woman and
her family. In addition to crews of women building homes currently
under construction, the day’s events will include tours of a
completed Habitat Newark home, landscaping of the Habitat Newark
children’s park, a pot luck luncheon, and a children’s craft hour.
Councilwoman at Large Mildred Crump is the honorary chair of Habitat
for Humanity Newark Women Build III.

“This a
great day, a really great day for all of us here in Newark,” was
the opening statement of Dana Rone, City Council Member for the
Central Ward of Newark, as she kicked off ceremonies to dedicate
two brand new homes at Habitat for Humanity Newark on January 12,
2008.
Council
Member Donald M. Payne Jr. talked about the good achieved by these
Habitat for Humanity homes. “These great homes bring back to
Newark the folks that have been here since the beginning, the
types of families we want back living in these neighborhoods.”

Ground was broken on Sunday October 7th for the Abraham House which
will be built in Newark’s Central Ward. The house is being sponsored
by members of Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Ethical Culture
and other religious groups. The groups will raise the money required
