Who is Eligible for Communications Lifeline?

It’s quick and easy to sign up for Verizon NJ’s Communications Lifeline.

You must be a Verizon residential landline phone customer or FiOS Internet customer to apply for these programs. If you need residential phone service or FiOS Internet service, contact Verizon NJ first at 1-800-VERIZON (1-800-837-4966). You are eligible for service if you participate in any of these programs:

  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Medicaid
  • Section 8 Federal Public Housing Program
  • Federal Veterans Pension
  • Federal Benefits Survivors Pension
  • Eligibility based on income

What are the Benefits of Communications Lifeline?

Under the Communications Lifeline program, Verizon New Jersey Inc. offers the following Lifeline supported services as an Eligible Telecommunications Carrier. Residential telephone customer may be eligible to receive free or discounted local telephone services. Communications Lifeline program participants can receive:

  • Flat rate service: $1.95*
  • Message rate service: $0.40*
  • Low use message rate: no monthly charge
  • Broadband (internet): $9.25 monthly discount

The offering is a Lifeline supported service.  Lifeline is a government assistance program that is supported by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and the Federal Communications Commission.  Lifeline service is a non-transferable benefit.  Only eligible consumers may enroll in the program.  You may qualify for Lifeline service if you can show proof that you participate in certain government assistance programs or your annual income is 135% below the Federal Poverty Guidelines.  If you qualify based on income, you will be required to provide income verification.  In addition, the Lifeline program is limited to one discount per household consisting of either wireline or wireless or broadband (internet) service.  Therefore, you are required to certify and agree that no other member of the household is receiving Lifeline service from Verizon or another communications provider.  Lifeline service is non-transferable.  Consumers who willfully make false statements in order to obtain the benefit can be punished by fine or imprisonment, or may be barred from the program.  All rates, terms and conditions included in this notice are subject to change and are current at the time of printing.
