Habitat Newark Dedicates House #72 Supported by Women Build

By Carol Manning and Marty Steinberg

Sylvia Lopereno and two of her three children join Dave Zurheide, Executive Director, to dedicate house #72

On Saturday, March 30, 2011, Habitat for Humanity Newark dedicated its 72nd home, the third one sponsored and built by Habitat Newark's Women Build III organization. The house is now the home of Sylvia Loperena, a mother of three who, with her two daughters, put in more than 400 hours of "sweat equity" to qualify as a Habitat for Humanity partner family. The dedication followed three years of fund-raising by the women of Women Build III before they could begin building.

A Family Affair

Sylvia Loperena

Sylvia

With the help of her two daughters, Habitat Newark's newest homeowner, Sylvia Loperena worked diligently to help build not only her new home, but also other Habitat homes in the area, altogether putting enough hours of labor to more than satisfy Habitat's down payment requirement of 400 hours of sweat equity. Born in nearby Belleville, New Jersey, Sylvia left with her parents to spend most of her youth and school years in Puerto Rico. She earned an Associate Degree at a community college in Puerto Rico. This single mom returned to New Jersey with her three children to begin their new lives in a small apartment a new life for herself in Newark.

Crew Works In Guatemala

Habitat Newark Volunteers Build Homes in Guatemala

It took a crew of seven volunteers, the new owners and two staff builders from "From Houses to Homes" but as you see the building has topped off and now ready for a roof

A group of volunteers who work regularly at Habitat for Humanity Newark were among the contingent that recently built homes for the poor in rural Guatemala. Although this was not an official Habitat for Humanity effort, the goals and aims are similar to the same and they succeeded in helping people who would normally have no other way find a greatly improved and safer place for their family to live.

It is time to get your gardening tools out and let Habitat for Humanity of Newark be your garden fairy.  Habitat for Humanity International partnered with The National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC), to help build and beautify thousands of homes across the United States.

It's Spring! Let's Build!

Zurheide

Our goal of eleven in '11 is more than a goal for new homes. Each of those homes brings an investment in our communities. Each of those homes brings connections with families and sponsors and volunteers.

Most notable this month is the progress we are making on our first venture in Irvington, Abraham House 2. We now have a significant amount of sponsorship dollars in place thanks to the vision and the generosity of TD Ameritrade and LeClair Ryan.
