It's
spring! Let's build! Our goal of eleven in '11 is more than a goal
for new homes. Each of those homes brings an investment in our
communities. Each of those homes brings connections with families
and sponsors and volunteers.
Most notable this month is the progress we are making on our first
venture in Irvington, Abraham House 2. We now have a significant
amount of sponsorship dollars in place thanks to the vision and the
generosity of TD Ameritrade and LeClair Ryan.
TD Ameritrade is a company that obviously recognizes the rewards of
working with and in communities. They have worked with Habitat for
Humanity in the past in more rural locations in Texas and Nebraska,
and now as a partial sponsor of the Irvington home, they are reaping
the rewards of partnering with Habitat Newark.
TD Ameritrade employees will be out in force for the first six weeks
of Thursdays and Fridays of the Irvington build including the wall
raising on May 19th.
LeClair Ryan is a regional law firm based in Richmond, Virginia that
also has a history of helping communities. They sponsored a unique
LEED multi-family project in Virginia, and have now have committed
to helping make Abraham House 2 a reality.
There are more opportunities for sponsorship, and in the spirit of
Abraham, it is my hope that the faith communities will come together
to help us complete the needed funding. Plans for the groundbreaking
are underway, and what a joy it will be to celebrate that day,
knowing that each groundbreaking ceremony of Habitat Newark means
that more members of our community have come together to help others
in need.
Also in the spirit of making connections and bringing people
together, we brought back a short but meaningful part of our Habitat
tradition. At our last Board meeting, members got the opportunity to
meet the newly selected partner families. It's important to me that
Norma Scott, Joyce Misiani and the Ashine family are not just names.
They are people with grateful hearts who, with Habitat Newark's
help, will work hard to earn the privilege of home ownership.
We are also moving forward with properties in the Ironbound Section
of Newark, but again, sponsors are needed to see these efforts
through to fruition. Let's welcome the spring, nurture our existing
efforts, and sow new seeds, so that we may continue to grow, and
both literally and figuratively, build!
