Women Build, a program of Habitat for
Humanity International, promotes the involvement of women in the
funding and construction of Habitat homes, providing an opportunity
for women to learn construction in a supportive environment and
empowering women as they address the issue of substandard housing.
The women of Habitat Newark's Women Build have funded and built
three homes in Newark since 2003. More than 400 women have had a
part in the Habitat Newark Women Build initiative since then. Many
have become regular committee members helping with everything from
fundraising to wall-raising. Several women have become weekly
volunteers at Habitat Newark and others come to build as often as
possible. The group has been honored by Soroptimist Intl with their
"Advancing the Status of Women" award and the Department of Homeland
Security honored the group at the "Women Changing America" Ceremony.
The Women Build program is sponsored nationally by Lowe's.
Habitat Newark Women Build is in the planning
stages to raise funds to sponsor their fourth home.
The Women Build initiative at Habitat Newark held
it's first meeting on January 21, 2003 when 23 women came together
to decide if they could meet the awesome goal of raising $80,000 and
building a home. Not only did this group meet their goal but the
committee grew to over 100 women and the first home was completed
and occupied by Ms Doris Martinez and her daughter Cyan in December
2004. Funds in excess of $100,000 were raised and the momentum
continued for Women Build II.
The Women Build II house was dedicated on April 16,
2006 and the Marbey family became its proud owners.
The Loperena family's Women Build III home
was dedicated March 30, 2011.
